The exhaust gases are burnt by the air injected into the exhaust by a system that we call Secondary air injection system. This is an emission control strategy for the vehicles. The way air is injected in the exhaust systems determines the way this strategy works. Also this strategy working method depends on where the air enters from to the exhaust stream. This has been varying over the cause of revolution.
The first systems that were first developed allowed injection of air at a point that was too close to the engine. Before the ejection of the gases, oxygen that was produced by this kind of systems could burn all the unburnt and partially burn fuel in the exhaust. On those first days of an invention of these systems, there used to be more unburnt fuel in the exhaust stream. But air injection helped to minimize the ejection of this unburnt fuel from the tailpipe. As a result they worked so well and this helped to reduce the amount of unburnt fuel the exhaust.
There are two types of air injection systems namely pumped air injection system and aspirated air injection system. Lets get to know what pumped air injection system is. Pumped air injection system is a system that uses air pump. This air pump is normally turned by the engine through the electric motor. So as to filter the large dirt that is capable of damaging the system, the screen is rotated. Then air gets it the injection point under minimal pressure. There is this part that is known as the check valve. This check valve prevents the exhaust getting back to the air injection system. Serious damage can result from the exhaust getting back to the air injection system.
Aspirated air injection is achieved by the negative force in the exhaust when the engine is idle. The valve known as aspirator valve is put on the injection point so as air can be drawn into the exhaust. The valve is made in such a way that it is very sensitive. Short negative pressure gets into the exhaust when the engine is at the idle state. These pressure results to air getting into the exhaust system through the aspirator valve. Most of the modern vehicles such as Toyota use this kind of systems.
